GRADY HALL
The NCAA's mission of balancing athletics and academics comes to life a stunning visual campaign directed by MTh's Grady Hall.
Every year during the height of March Madness, the NCAA launches a new campaign to reinforce its core mission. For the second year in a row, Y&R San Francisco turned to Motion Theory director Grady Hall and MTh Creative Director Kaan Atilla in order to create two visually ambitious spots.
The first spot, "Huddle," pulls out of a Coach John Wooden huddle circa 1973, revealing a massive huddle of 400,000 student-athletes listening to Coach Wooden's timeless message. "Huddle" represents an amazing achievement - a fully digital John Wooden, seen in a daylight closeup, as well as re-creation and integration of elements from the archival footage.
The second spot, "Under Construction," creates full-scale construction sites in tiny N-scale (1:160) next to student-athletes in different situations. The spot starts by conveying the idea that student-athletes are under construction the entire time they are going to school, and then ends with a recent graduate happily starting her first job.
Hall worked closely with Creative Director Kaan Atilla to build the distinctive looks for each spot. CG Supervisor Danny Zobrist oversaw the CG for both spots, teaming with Lead Compositor Danny Yoon on "Huddle" and Ryan Bozajian on "Under Construction." Image Metrics partnered on the creation of the digital John Wooden, including full mouth animation for every shot. The resulting spots launched during March Madness and will air throughout the year on NCAA events.
