"Know Your Enemy" has Motion Theory playing with fire for Green Day.
For "Know Your Enemy," the new single from America's resident punk band Green Day, Motion Theory director Mathew Cullen went back to the roots of the music video, putting the Reprise Records artists' music front and center.
The video centers on the lyrics of the song, the contrasting ideas of containment and freedom. Using dynamic, unpredictable camera angles, Cullen captured the band performing in an urban landscape - a prison of a city rapidly closing in on them. This faceless enemy of the lyrics can represent everything from politicians to terrorism to our own apathy. The band is being monitored by all angles, spotted by megawatt spotlights and hovered by helicopters. The very cage that is being built around the band turns the performance into the ultimate rock show. The lights, the walls, the chaos, the camera footage - everything contributes to making this an arena stage that gives justice to the power of the lyrics and the song. With lights burning so brightly, sparks fly and the band's shadows burst into full-blown pyrotechnics, reaching the climax of the song. Cullen and Creative Director Kaan Atilla led the team of artists from conception to completion of "Know Your Enemy" which world premiered on over 200 MTV and VH1 network media outlets.
